Yogurt Helps Clear Vaginal Infections

Pregnant women shouldn't take drugs. This restriction poses a problem when they develop bacterial vaginosis, particularly since the drug most commonly prescribed for the infection-metronidazole-is suspected of causing birth defects during the first trimester.
These Israeli researchers treated bacterial vaginosis with "10 to 15 ml of commercially available yoghurt [containing] Lactobacillus acidophilus," introduced through vaginal douching. Compared to an alternative treatment group and an untreated control group, the yogurt group improved significantly within two days, and even increased their advantage during the next two months.
"Our results indicate that the continuous correction of both the vaginal pH and Lactobacillus flora is crucial for normal vaginal ecology, and is responsible for the high treatment [success] rate." - A Neri et aI., "Bart.erial vaginosis in pregnancy treated with yoghurt, " Acta Ohstetricw Gy1ll:colbgica et Scandinavica 72 (1993): 17-19.
