Why Cancer Cells Talk to Themselves

Wound healing and cancer- are almost identical processes, this article points out. "A wound is a tumor
that heals itself," while "tumors are wounds that do not heal." Cancer, it would appear, is a normally healthy process that somehow goes awry.
In this going awry, cancer cells produce for themselves certain re atory molecules that healthy cells receive from theIr neighbors. These regulatory molecules are "immediate local signals used by cells to talk to each other," but cancer cells talk mainly to themselves. Healthy cells therefore depend on their neighbors in a way that cancer cells apparently don't.
But this doesn't mean the cells are at fault. "A cell can take new information from its environment and, depending on the context of its past experience and its present stimuli, give an appropriate response," and cancer cells may be doing just that. So the condition we call cancer may be a healthy cell's response to a context that is sick. - M. B. Sporn and A. B. Roberts, .. Autocline secretion-l0 years later," Annals of Internal Medicine 117 (1992): 408-14.
Editor's note. The article recommends giving those regulatory molecules as drugs. The natural healing philosophy suggests, in contrast, that we may adjust the context of our cells by adjusting the broader context of the body as a whole.
