Tumors That Disappear on Their Own

Every year, medical journals publish "a great number of interesting and unusual cases" of malignant tumors that disappear on their own. Many researchers merely report these "spontaneous regressions" without trying to explain them. Others suggest that they occur when some event triggers host resistance, or the body's natural immunity to cancer. "Directly or indirectly, all biological explanatIons rely on this concept" of host resistance.
So what triggers host resistance? From cases published between 1900 and 1987, these authors cite "pregnancy, severe dietary changes, or the cessation ofingestion of oral contraceptives." Other cases "have been directly attributed to infection," which "incites an increased host immunity reaction which, in turn, may actually increase an individuals defenses against a tumour."
In very few cases did the reporting researchers su est that the patient's mind might be mvolved, possibly because "no physician was willing to risk his/her reputation by reporting a case of spontaneous regression hel she felt was due toa psychologi cal method."
