Sound like your office? We all work with people who talk about trying to live healthier and stay fit, yet few of the "talkers" every take action. Why? Because they don't know where or how - to start.

How can you help? For starters, by sharing the information below with your colleagues and "spreading the word" about chiropractic at your office.

The Root of the Problem

How are chiropractors different from other doctors? They go to the root of the problem. Dr. Christiana focuses on the causes of health issues, not the symptoms. By addressing the factors underlying health problems, Dr. Christiana seeks to allow the body to heal itself - not simply cover up symptoms while the condition continues to worsen. It is this focus on "causes" that makes chiropractors prevention specialists. Chiropractors work to identify potential concerns and stop discomfort or disease before it starts. Even if you're not in pain, regular chiropractic checkups can help ensure your optimal health.

Your Personal "Healthy Lifestyle Coach"

As a prevention specialist, Dr. Christiana knows that the key to staying healthy is to maintain a wellness-oriented lifestyle. Sticking to a healthy diet and exercise plan is a tough challenge, especially for those with overloaded work and social schedules. Look to chiropractic care to help you develop a diet and exercise plan that will work and help you stay motivated. Chiropractors are experts at creating healthy lifestyles, and Dr. Christiana will introduce you to unique and effective ways to live healthy - even with your hectic schedule.

Spinal health is the foundation of the chiropractic approach to wellness. Chiropractors focus on identifying and correcting dysfunctional areas in the spine called vertebral subluxations, which occur when bones (vertebrae) are out of alignment or motion is restricted. Vertebral subluxations are associated with a myriad of disorders, such as back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headache, ear infection, premenstrual syndrome and asthma. Chiropractors use gentle and effective maneuvers called chiropractic adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations and prevent their recurrence.

Back Pain

We all know someone who suffers from back pain. Backache is a huge problem, affecting an estimated 90 percent of Americans at some point during their lives - and costing the United States ap..proximately $28 to $40 billion per year. For many people, their first visit to a chiropractor stems from a bout with back pain;

This particularly annoying condition can wreak havoc on your daily existence. In a study involving 2,741 low-back pain patients, 80 percent reported that their affliction caused "significant negative effects on everyday life." (Review Rheumatology 1998;65:33-40.)

A hefty body of research documents the fact that chiropractic is the most effective way to relieve back pain. For example, one review article analyzed 58 clinical trials. Experts found that patients with acute lowback pain who received chiropractic care were 17 percent more likely to recover within three weeks (Annals of Internal Medicine 1992;17:5908). Another study, in the prestigious British Medical Journal, concluded, "Chiropractic almost certainly confers worthwhile, long-term, benefits in comparison with hospital outpatient management." (BMJ 1990;300: 1431- 7.)

A recent editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that it is "no longer in dispute" that chiropractic can help patients with low-back pain (New England Journal of Medicine 1998;339:15).

Other Aches and Pains

Research also supports the use of chiropractic for neck and extremity disorders. For example, one study compared chiropractic to physiotherapy for shoulder girdle complaints. Patients who received adjustments healed significantly faster than those undergoing physiotherapy (BMJ 1997;314: 13201325).

Chiropractic Is Safer Than Drugs

The risk of harmful side effects from pain medication is clearly documented. How do you escape from pain without drugs? Chiropractic is the natural solution. Studies indicate that chiropractic is safer than drugs for many complaints, including back and neck pain, migraine and tension headaches. One study compared

chiropractic to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Advil@, Motrin@ and Orudis@. The study concluded, "The best evidence indicates that cervical manipulation [neck adjustment] for neck pain is much safer than the use of NSAIDs, by as much as a factor of
several hundred times. There is no evidence that indicated NSAID use is any more effective than cervical manipulation for neck pain." (Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics 1996; 18530-6.)
