The Immunizations That Didn't Protect
| In December 1987,
several staff members at a large New York nursing home became ill with the flu.
Only 10% of the staff had been immunized. Most of the nursing home's elderly
residents had been immunized, in contrast, and presumably protected against the
flu. Yet 30% of the immunized residents became sick versus only 25% of those who hadn't been immunized. In other words, being immunized increased a resident's odds of becoming sick by about 20%.
