Researchers admit Chemotherapy a failure

Cancer researchers have admitted that chemotherapy fails to kill cancer cells, but say they're not sure why. Investigators at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute said they
found a protein, galectin-3, which apparently prevents cancer cell death. The finding was made by treating in vitro human breast cancer cells with the chemotherapy drug, cis-Platinum. They published their report in the journal, Cancer Research.
"We need to understand why chemotherapy fails before we can correct it," said Avraham Raz, Ph.D., lead investigator of the study and a professor at 'V"ayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. "Answering this question has important implications for virtually all types of cancer therapy."
The research was supported by the U.S. Army, the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Paul Zuckerman Support Foundation for Cancer Research.
Despite the admission that chemotherapy is not effective in killing cancer cells - and that medical science does not understand the full reasons for its failure - thousands of patients are subjected to the expensive and p'ainful procedure each year.
