  Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology found even more direct evidence of the healthful benefits of fruits. Specifically, they found that nutrients in fruit help reduce damage to our genes.
They discovered this by looking for chemical evidence of gene damage in the urine of their subjects. Eating fruit caused the evidence of damage to drop. So did eating vegetables.
