Death of child in New York draws attention to alternative care for ear infections

  Following several highly publicized complications related to the insertion of plastic tubes in children's ears, including one death in New York, chiropractic isreceiving growing attention as an appropriate choice for parents seeking care for their children with these sorts of problems. In a recent aI1icle in Gannett Newspapers nationwide, a headline read "Operation to Drain Ears Overused," and contained a parallel article with the heading: "Chiropractors, Herbs, Diets Enlisted in Ear Infection Fight" In this "altemative"article, the following statement was published:
"Chiropractic adjustments work by opening the eustachian tube that connects the back of the nose with the middle ear," said New Rochelle chiropractor, Joan Fallon. "When the eustachian tube is blocked, ear infections and fluid build-up may occur...This is a safe, non-invasive way to help a child with this problem," Dr. Fallon said. She says 70 percent to 80 percent of children showed visible improvement on objective tests following the [chiropractic adjustment] treatments..."
The article stated that with the advent of "sign if cant increase in otitis media this winter season, it is clear that pediatricians are turning to other options for their children. One pediatrician interviewed for the article admitted ITustation with this growing [ear] problem and said he began sending children to Dr. Fallon "who didn't get better with antibiotics."
Dr. Fallon's practice is also now the site of a unique and, of inter-professional instruction.
Beginning last month, medical students trom New York Medical College planning to do a pediatrics residency rotate two days a week in Dr. Fallon's office to observice chiropractic care for children. This program has been instituted with the help of a local pediatrician.
