A Link Between Exhaust and Cancer?
| Benzene has been associated with two lymphatic
cancers-lymphoma and leukemia. What, then, about the benzene found in common
automobile exhaust? Could that be associated with lymphatic cancers as
well? This study says yes. The author compared lymphaticcancer rates and cars-per-household in 22 counties in Britain, and found a strong association. A study in Denver found a similar association between traffic density and childhood leukemias in toddlers. These associations don't prove that the benzene in exhaust is causing the cancers, but they're consistent with it. Exhaust pollution is often strongest, by the way, inside the car. People who drive a lot or who live in high-traffic neighborhoods would be wise to watch their health in other ways to keep their defenses strong. - S. P. Wolff, "Correlation between car ownership and leukaemia: Is nonoccupational exposure to benzene from petrol and motor vehicle exhaust a causative factor in leukaemia and lymphoma?"
